Momentum Dance Theatre is a professional dance and theater company, based in Washington, DC.  Founded in 1986 by Artistic Director Roberta Rothstein, Momentum blends jazz, hip hop, house, modern, Latin dance, and theater in performance, outreach and education.  Momentum's dances are marked by musicality, wit, unusual pairings of music and dance styles, high energy and passion.  Momentum's theater pieces weave personal stories  to create fast paced, compelling dance theater that provokes thought and discussion about contemporary issues.  Momentum sees itself as a community educator, especially about the history of jazz dance and hip hop, connecting current trends to a rich background.  Momentum educates and showcases the next generation of dancers through its original show "Jazz, Hip Hop Nutcracker" and through innovative programs like "Dance In Its Time", "PopUp Dances" and its Jazz Hip Hop Camp.

The Washington Post says "Momentum has style as well as substance" with "a zany sensibility". Momentum has taken on the subject of women and body image in "THIN", relations between blacks and Jews in "Collard Greens and Gefilte Fish" and the cultural implications of Barbie in "Living Doll" which the Washington Post found "darkly amusing".
